Work Yourself Out of a Job

31Days of Parenting Teens::Day 14

At one time in our history, daughters helped their mothers with all aspects of the household, from cooking and cleaning to washing and mending. As our society has gotten busier and more compartmentalized, we have lost this one-on-one, practical mentoring.

As homeschooling mothers it is far more common for us to have the time and attention to mentor our daughters in this way. However, it can also be easy to forget. Sometimes, we don't want to release control of how clean the house is or whether the biscuits turn out right.

However, there is only one way to learn these skills~ by doing. This means there will be messed up biscuits, dust bunnies that didn't get tamed, sloppy laundry, or dirty dishes in the cupboard. We must bring them into what we are doing and teach them the ins and outs of running a household and caring for a family. We must equip them well for life on their own.

The idea is always to be working yourself out of a job.

And by the way, teen boys need the same thing~ but you can let dad (or other male figure) do that.
