Your Baby’s Growing Up:: for Girls

31 Days of Parenting Teens:: Day 24

I'm sorry to tell you, but your little girl is going to grow into a woman. Sooner than you want her to. Do you remember the day you grew into a woman? The day your womanhood arrived? You know what I'm talking about, right? The day you first had your period.

Since I have three daughters, I've thought a lot about how to help this wonderful occasion not feel like a burden. I wondered, "What would have made me feel better about that first day?"

After listening to conversations online about this very topic, I decided that I wanted to put together a sort of kit for the arrival of the day. A kit full of comfort and love. A kit to be given before the day arrives. A kit that would be ready to be used the moment her period appears.

First find a pretty basket or decorative box. Then fill it with:

  • A few types of pads- so she can decide which she likes. We use cloth menstrual pads here, so I make a set in her chosen fabrics.
  • Panti-liners (I make these, too.)
  • Her own heating pad or rice bag (to be heated in microwave) to help alleviate cramping pain.
  • Maybe some ThermaCare Menstrual Patches. A little heat on the go works wonders for cramps when you can't sit in one place all day.
  • A small calendar (like would fit in your purse) to record dates when she starts and ends period.
  • Chocolate. Because every woman craves chocolate sometimes, right?
  • Something pretty and fun~ maybe a new book, a journal and pretty pen, a ball of soft yarn if she knits or crochets, a new necklace… something she would love and would make her feel special.

Pampering goes a long way to help a girl feel better when the waves of new womanhood come crashing in. Also, be sure that she knows mom is ready and willing to generously give out hugs as she needs them.

    1. What a great ideal! I would probably also include a pain reliever, favorite perfume, deodorant, special undies just for this time, and maybe some hair accessories (even though they may feel yucky they can still present themselves well).
