Summer Olympic Learning:: Family Connections {For Summer} Blog Hop

Summer learning.

We are year round schoolers, so there is always some kind of learning happening around our house no matter the time of year. This summer, however, has been a little different. It's been super hot and dry, and we've been super busy with odd things that take us away from our routines.

All of this means that not much learning has been happening at our house this summer. It also means that many of our typical family times have been crowded out.

This week has been a different story.

Why?

Because of the Olympics!

We have spent hours cheering for our favorites together. We've watched stories about the athletes and the obstacles they have overcome to get to this place. We have enjoyed one another's company and laughed together.

Family Connections.

But this week's theme for Family Connections is summer learning. Where did that come in?

This week has been my favorite kind of learning– the kind when no one realizes they're learning.

We've learned about England. We've learned more about our favorite Olympic sports, as well as some new ones– like water polo. The children were fascinated that they had never seen water polo before.

We've learned about perseverance,  hard work, overcoming obstacles, and enduring hardships. We've learned about sportsmanship. We;ve learned about being arrogant and about being humble.

And the children have decided that it's very important to do well in that high school speech class. They have seen that learning to communicate well is a skill that everyone needs. After watching about 5 interviews where the athlete does not really answer the question he was asked or simply repeats the same answer to every question, we all agreed that good communication and listening skills are undervalued.

Summer Olympics. Summer Learning.

What has your family been learning during the Olympics?
